Put short, I have played flute since 1966, and flute playing has always been central to my life, whether it has been in various academic or community orchestras, or in public recitals since 1986.

Now I seek to improve flute playing by bringing my own and other flute players' instruments to their playing potential through conscientious flute repair. What philosophy, experience, and skill do I bring to flute repair? Let's see...

Historicly, I started working on my first flutes as a teenager. However, I hadn't contemplated doing it for money until I joined with a friend who worked with flute maker Jack Goosman, in 1989. Then I got serious about it in year 2000. I studied some historical expositions, such as Boehm's The Flute and Flute Playing, and modern texts as well. I also pursued training with Jonathon Landell (see Landell Flutes Online), Jeff Smith (see the J.L. Smith Company, Jeff Weissman (see Jeff Weissman Flutes), and David Straubinger (see Straubinger Flutes).

Over these years, I have serviced hundreds of flutes to a greater or lesser degree. The flutes have been Powell, Haynes, Brannen, Muramatsu, Miyazawa, Trevor James, Armstrong, Artley, Yamaha, Gemeinhardt, King, Buescher, Selmer, and other brands of flute. The services required have been every thing from overhaul to dent removal, reconnecting springs to repadding, cleaning and more.

My objective in each service is the same: condition the instrument to play at it's potential, for a price that leaves the value in the instrument itself. This is true whether it is a well-known professional's hand-made gold flute or a child's first alloy, c-foot, closed hole model.

I believe that any flute can be serviced by many different service-people. In fact, I believe anyone who cares about and understands the flute, with patience and accurate vision, hearing, and tactile senses can service a flute - one pays such a person to undertake the effort or service, to take the time, and to endure the frustration as well as the costs for materials and tools. Some service-people don't seem to care or know about the flute. Many others will effectively solve problems. Therefore, I don't say that you can't get service elsewhere, but I do say that you are unlikely to find better service provided elsewhere at any price, in as timely a fashion, as you will find when you work with Flute Dynamics.

This is because I guarantee my work for a period of one year - if any of the parts installed or adjustments made during service of your flute at Flute Dynamics degrade or fail, I will remedy the situation, free of charge except for shipping.

I also say you are unlikely to get better service elsewhere because of the way I work.

How do I work? You contact me to discuss your flute, piccolo, alto, or bass. The discussion doesn't end until we agree on what your goals for the flute are, and you have my bid on what it takes to remedy any problems, or service the flute, and what the calendar time required will be. Then your flute will be treated accordingly, at the bid price or less.
